[8] Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
My mom had a saying when something didn't sit right with her. She would say, "My spirit doesn't bear witness to it." If a pastor misused a scripture, the Bible was misquoted, or what was being said didn't line up with the Word, she would point it out. It used to seem like such a funny phrase, but it makes a lot more sense to me now.
The Bible is pretty clear on most things. On others, meanings and interpretations can be a bit vague. For the things that aren't clear, we have to seek God's wisdom. We're not equipped to know and understand it all. That's one of the reasons we are provided with the presence of the Holy Spirit.
