[18] For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: [19] whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things. [20] For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, [21] who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.
I have heard a lot of bad advice over the years.
"You deserve it."
"Follow your heart."
"Do what makes you happy."
The list is a mile long... Those offerings came from friends, colleagues, and coworkers who concerned themselves more bout my selfish tendencies and less about my spiritual health. They were all well-meaning but completely misguided. I don't need any encouragement to be self-centered.
As I have grown in my walk with the Lord, I have come to appreciate the people who aren't afraid to correct me, call me out, and remind me of my first (and highest) calling. Nothing about my flesh enjoys correction, but my repentant heart recognizes my constant need for that kind of fellowship. Godly friends will sacrifice to threat of temporary friction for the sake of eternal joy.
