[16] To deliver you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words, [17] Who forsakes the companion of her youth, And forgets the covenant of her God. [18] For her house leads down to death, And her paths to the dead; [19] None who go to her return, Nor do they regain the paths of life— [20] So you may walk in the way of goodness, And keep to the paths of righteousness. [21] For the upright will dwell in the land, And the blameless will remain in it; [22] But the wicked will be cut off from the earth, And the unfaithful will be uprooted from it.
Wisdom and wise counsel are gifts that God provides to keep us from pinballing haphazardly through life. Coupled with sound decisions and solid, godly advice, the Holy Spirit actively guides us through the obstacles of worldly sin. Scripture is clear about what we should do, what we should avoid, and the outcomes for each... immorality and idolatry lead to death.
I can defend any position I choose to take, but if that position causes me to stray from God's Word, it is an idol. I can think back to so many idols I foolishly defended over the years. Those things (offenses, addictions, etc.) kept me distanced from God and exiled from His peace and presence. These experiences are the exact things He used to lead me back to life.
