[1] My son, if you become surety for your friend, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger, [2] You are snared by the words of your mouth; You are taken by the words of your mouth. [3] So do this, my son, and deliver yourself; For you have come into the hand of your friend: Go and humble yourself; Plead with your friend. [4] Give no sleep to your eyes, Nor slumber to your eyelids. [5] Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
I know what it's like to be in debt. When I was in college, I found out quickly that credit cards were a tool of the enemy. I signed up and got one. Within a couple of months, I had another. I could easily swipe away for gas, food, or any random thing I wanted. Within six months, I had racked up almost two thousand dollars of debt... all by myself.
Nobody came to my rescue. I didn't ask for help. I got myself into the mess. I had to own it and dig out of it alone. It made me appreciate it that much more when I finally paid them off.
Debt has never been part of God's plan, but responsibility is. When we assume responsibility for other people, we assume ownership of their foolish decisions as well. I don't mind helping anyone, but I have no desire to afford someone else's wants; especially when they can't guarantee their ability to pay. I can love others without financial strings attached.
Romans 13:8 - Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.
