Romans 1:18-23 NKJV

[18] For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, [19] because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. [20] For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, [21] because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. [22] Professing to be wise, they became fools [23] and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

An idol is anything we place ahead of God. It can be money, family, addiction, lust, or any other thing that draws our focus and holds our attention. We are all susceptible to it. No one is immune. A large part of the sanctification battle is this constant pull away from our Creator.

Paul wasn't pointing out hollow threats. God wrath is very real. It is our unhealthy habits and foolish practices that set us up for a slippery slope to failure. It doesn't happen overnight. It is a long, slow process of choosing careless comfort over doing the hard work.

I have been blessed to experience a level of deliverance that left me with no doubts about God. All the years I spent avoiding Him were washed away by His enduring mercy and grace. One of the reasons I write about my experiences is my response to His overwhelming love and favor. I spend time in Scripture acknowledge and honor all He has done for me.
