[9] Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. [10] Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; [11] not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; [12] rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; [13] distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.
It's easy to return good for good. If someone is good to me, I'll be good to them every time. That principle makes perfect sense and requires zero effort or discipline.
God isn't calling the masses to the path of simplest or easiest. Following Jesus.... REALLY FOLLOWING JESUS... is one of the hardest things I've ever done. I don't mean wearing Christian shirts, attending church, or praying over my meal.
I have had to learn to turn the other cheek. I have had to allow the Holy Spirit to open my heart and cover my mouth. I have had to return good for evil, kindness for anger, and love for disdain without immediate reward; knowing that I am not appealing to how I feel... I am doing what the Lord requires.
