A Labor in Vain

From The Screwtape Letters: "At the very least they (humans) can be persuaded that the bodily position makes no difference to their prayers; for they constantly forget, what you (the demon wormwood) must always remember, that they are animals and that whatever their bodies do affects their souls. It is funny how humans always picture us putting things into their minds: in reality our best work is done by keeping things out." ~ C.S.Lewis

Rejecting God is very hard work. With pick and shovel we chip away at every work he has done in our lives. We reject the people and places He has delivered us to and pretend we never received anything from Him. We exchange the piney fragrance of His blessings...for what, exactly?

"...They have forsaken me,

the fountain of living waters,

and dug cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water."

Jeremiah 2:13

Digging holes is hard work. He anguishes to see us labor in vain.

Aren't you tired of it all? Aren't you thirsty for something other than serving yourself

Only to be left emptier? Today, Jesus says, "Come to me..." Matthew 11:29,30

No matter how deep your hole, His love and grace is deeper still.
