[6] Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king, And do not stand in the place of the great; [7] For it is better that he say to you, “Come up here,” Than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom your eyes have seen.
My mom had a picture on her refrigerator that said, "It's nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice." It was a neat play on words, but it was also quite thought provoking. How often do we (all of us) like to think highly of ourselves? I value my time greatly. If I am unappreciated, my presence is optional. I am more than happy to bow out at a moments notice if I don't feel seen or respected. I am proud.
What if Jesus did that? He IS the King, yet He came down to us. He met us where we are without the expectation that we could rise to His level. I know I can not be above God. Why would I believe that same principle to be true when I compare myself to others? I am not better or more deserving than anyone. I am called to be like Christ and He came as a humble servant King. He requires that level of humility from me.
James 4:10 - Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
