[30] I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; [31] And there it was, all overgrown with thorns; Its surface was covered with nettles; Its stone wall was broken down. [32] When I saw it, I considered it well; I looked on it and received instruction: [33] A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest; [34] So shall your poverty come like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.
I believe that having downtime is an important part of our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. We need to rest in order to stay healthy. God saw fit to incorporate rest into His pattern of creation. We were made in His image, so it makes perfect sense.
As important as rest is, it is equally as important to recognize that our purpose isn't in the rest. We are made to be productive. Work gives us purpose. It is a form of ministry and a way to honor God by being good stewards of His provision.
