[17] Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; [18] Lest the Lord see it, and it displease Him, And He turn away His wrath from him. [19] Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the wicked; [20] For there will be no prospect for the evil man; The lamp of the wicked will be put out.
I hate to admit it, but there is a part of me that feels a certain amount of satisfaction when bad things happen to bad people. "They had it coming." "You got what you deserved." I can take it so far as to justify it with scripture...
Galatians 6:7 - Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.
I don't believe I am taking it out of context, but I am appreciating applied justice as if it were mine to give. God is just, but He is also merciful to the undeserving. If I got everything I deserved, I would be going to Hell. It's not my job to admire justice or celebrate another person's downfall. My first and only concern should be humble gratitude for the grace He shows to me.
